THE GARDEN

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,my God, in whom I trust.”...He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Psalm 91:1-4 The children learned in worship this week that God takes good care of us. When we are growing up, he shows His care for us in many ways, primarily through the care of our parents. We discussed the story of Elijah and how God took care of him by sending ravens to feed him in a very desperate time. Also, we meditated on the words in Psalm 91 mentioned above. What peace to know His very special care.

On Tuesday, we celebrated Isabella’s 6th birthday and presented her with the book Love Gave. During park time, we enjoyed a new hopscotch set and playing volleyball and soccer. Inside, we enjoyed playing with plastic eggs in the water table as well as in the  rice table. We also made clay birds and eggs with Miss Emma.

Fun with food in The Garden!

It’s incredible to delicious dishes that can be made with play-doh!

SEEDS

This week was filled with food, fresh air and fine arts. We began with our worship time, learning about how Jacob got his brother Esau’s birthright by using a bowl of lentil soup! To remember it, we all made lentil soup together and it was a big hit for most of the students. In our worship time, we also honored Amanda and Mercedes as they both celebrated birthdays this week. We enjoyed our time outdoors by going to the big park, where some kids found some mushrooms growing and other kids enjoyed playing volleyball with Mr. Jean.

The first thing the students wanted to do when they walked into Science class was to check on the decomposition experiment. I was so excited to show them the different slices of bread because although the bread with the antibacterial cream and the one that was toasted there was no change, the one that was plain was covered in mold! The kids squealed and were so grossed out when they saw it! Some loved to look at it closer, while others did not want to get close to it! The older group recorded their observations in their journals and made space for a last observation in two more weeks. Then, we enjoyed looking at the papyrus plant that Carib brought from his house to share. Finally, we spoke about the science behind the paint Egyptians used in their tomb paintings. We saw pictures of the beautiful rocks that they would grind into powder. This powder would be combined with gum and water to create the right texture. To demonstrate the process, we brought ground up chalk and used egg whites instead of gum as the binding agent. The kids helped to grind, pour, and mix the colors. On Thursday, the older student chose a color that we have made to paint tin their camels they drew with Mr. Jared in History class. This week, the younger students will have the opportunity to paint with it as well. They had a great time testing if our homemade papyrus would withstand the water table, as we learned that real papyrus was made to be waterproof.

Finally, all the students were able to catch up on some of their Egyptian student sheets and timeline work from their binders, while with Mrs. Emily, the kids rehearsed their song, “Tell the Story.” They are sounding amazing!

Fun with food at SEEDS!

This science experiment involving watching mold grow on bread drew a few shrieks from the students. Speaking of fungi fun, Elena and her friends discovered some wild puffball mushrooms in the park. Finally, we made lentil soup together after hearing the story of Esau and Jacob and created ancient Egyptian paint using egg whites.

OAKS - Middle and High School

This week in Biology, the students learned about the energy cycle, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. They learned how plants take energy from the sun and then create carbohydrates that provide animals and humans the energy sources needed to live. They also briefly touched on significant figures and how to identify them as it relates to science.

The Oaks were a great help as they made the lentil soup that we heard about in our Worship time. Speaking of worship time, the OAKS have been a great help receiving and organizing the Seeds kids as they arrive. In their fellowship time with Jean, they are learning about what “worship” means. They’ve been studying the Scripture to see how they can prepare their own hearts in order to serve God with joy in Spirit and Truth.

Jean not only has been discipling the OAKS, but sharing with them his passion for volleyball too in Physical Education! They had a great game this week and have truly caught the fever.

The OAKS students helped prepare the finishing touches for our lentil soup and helped serve it to the rest of the students.

THE ARTS ACADEMY

Fall Drama Workshop

We are excited to announce that rehearsals have begun for our fall workshop performance of Charles Dickens: “A Christmas Carol.” The 15 students in the class began last Friday and we are so excited to see how they are going to grow over the next few weeks.
