THE GARDEN

This week our letter was “x” for “foX” and we learned about being wise. Foxes are very smart animals and are usually portrayed in stories as tricksters or villains. But we learned that being wise is not just knowing things, but what we do with what we know. The students loved learning about three different kinds of foxes, pretending to be foxes, and playing a new game where the fox goes hunting and “catches” another student. Inside, the highlight of the week was learning a new stitch in sewing. They are using this new stitch for a special project they are working on. They will continue working on this project this week.

SEEDS

In Science, we wrapped up the 5th day of creation by talking about how God designed feathers in birds. First of all, we talked about how feathers have hooks and barbules that create a velcro-like mechanism for the feathers to always come back together after being separated. I brought a few feathers in for the kids to take a look at at some were so intrigued that they asked me for a magnifying glass to look more closely. The second feature was that wings are waterproof. This doesn’t occur naturally nut God gave birds a preening gland so that they can take some oil and spread it on their feathers. I brought in a basin to demonstrate how effective this oil can be for the bird. We had two pieces of toilet paper. One was plain and another was dipped in cooking oil. The one without the oil broke apart and sunk to the bottom of the basin, while the one with the oil floated and remained strong. At the end, they were able to sketch a feather with its parts in their journal and decorate them as if they had designed a new bird

OAKS

Not only was it Anaiah’s birthday this week, but it was her turn to tell the worship story. She told the account of Daniel’s friends as they stood boldly before the king of Babylon and refused to bow down to his idol. The other Oaks helped act out the story. The students also had a great time in Mrs. Michelle’s class working on balance with their obstacle courses.

Arts Academy - Drama Clubs

Both Drama Clubs had a great time this week working on their chosen scripts. The younger students are doing a variation on the story he Emperor’s New Clothes, while the older students are working on a parody of Shakespeare’s plays.

Memory Verse

Do you not know? Do you not hear?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in;
who brings princes to nothing,
and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.
Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows on them, and they wither,
and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
— Isaiah 40:21-24
