THE GARDEN
As we prepare to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus did on the cross for us in a few weeks, our worship stories turned to the life of Jesus. We learned about the reaction of Simeon and Anna when they saw baby Jesus arrive at the temple. God showed that this was the messiah, the rescuer that they were waiting for. The light had finally come into the world! After the story I asked the student if they knew what was the biggest problem people have. They gave me several answers until I led them to the problem of sin. We discussed how Jesus came to solve the problem of sin by dying on the cross and making a way for people to be rescued from the punishment of sin. On Thursday, we spoke about our theme of the week “I can’t hide anything from God.” They were challenged by knowing that God is there for them and that He sees them even when they act in ways that don’t please Him. We spoke about the importance of coming to God and praying for forgiveness as well as making it right with whoever we have wronged. Outside, the kids loved playing soccer in teams at the park and inside they we worked on flower art to welcome the first day of spring. On Tuesday, we learned to draw tulips and each child chose how many they wanted to draw on their page using oil pastels. On Thursday, they used watercolor brushes to paint their beautiful creations. Crazy hair and hat day was also a great way to wrap up the week!
This week:
Letter: “R” is for “Rock”
Theme: I listen and obey; I build my life on the rock.
SEEDS
This week in worship, we got to see Isaiah (from OAKS) lead his first worship story. He did a great job as he told about the confrontation between the prophet Elijah and the priests of Baal at Mt. Carmel. In the story, we learned that God was able to prove that there truly is no God like himself. The students took this knowledge with them in History class as we discussed how the different kings of the two nations of Israel and Judah ruled; some by obeying God, and some, like Ahab in Elijah’s time, disobeying God.
This week we “splashed” through the fifth day of creation. After a short presentation, our younger students worked on a journal page with their favorite fish, bird, or both as a way to introduce the theme. The older students learned about osmosis and how it affects fish. They learned that freshwater has less solutes dissolved in it, the water molecules are attracted to the solutes inside the fish. Therefore, freshwater fish have to urinate often and don’t drink as much water in order not to have too much water in them. Saltwater fish, on the other hand, need to drink a lot of water and try not to urinate as much since the water in them is attracted to the salt and other solutes outside of them and they would dehydrate if they did not do this. They drew two fish in their journals, a saltwater fish that drank little water and urinated often and a freshwater fish that drank a lot of water and didn’t urinate much. Their drawings, clearly depicted that these fish were in trouble! Thankfully, God has designed this fish with the instinct to do what needs to be done to survive.
We had great times in the park, playing mini games of soccer and volleyball. This was complemented by the great GAMES we played with Mrs. Michelle in Physical Education. This was a great practice for this week’s upcoming GAME DAY. And as you see below, we had some very festive designs for crazy hair and hat day.
OAKS
We honored three people this week who celebrated their birthdays: Twins Olivia and Joshua and our volunteer Ana. Great times were had in these celebrations as well as the time spent in the park, playing music and showing off some crazy headwear.
Memory Verse
“The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness, for His namesake, He restores my soul. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me, among my enemies.. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows; surely goodness and mercy will follow me, all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
