The Garden

This week during worship time, we learned about when Jesus called the twelve disciples while walking by the Sea of Galilee, inviting them to follow Him. They became His special helpers.

We also learned the story of Jesus calming a storm while on a boat with His disciples. All He had to say was, “Quiet! Be still!” and immediately the wind stopped. Even the wind and the storm obey Him, and we should too.

During circle time, we called on our friend the Polar Bear and asked, “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?” We heard the Emperor penguin sounds!

We learned how to do the Penguin Hokey Pokey dance and discussed what clothes we should pack in our suitcase when visiting icy, cold, snowy places—like where penguins live. We will be learning more about Penguins.

During activity time, we used white play dough to build snow mountains and igloos and played with peg penguins. We had lots of fun dressing up in winter clothes and playing with snowballs. We also practiced writing letters in the “snow” (epsom salt) using paintbrushes.

The Seeds Program

BIBLE

In Worship this week, we learned how Jesus declared openly how he would be buried (using the picture of Jonah in the belly of the fish) and then rose again on the third day!  He wanted his disciples to know that God would do this and it would fulfill His promise of giving life to all those who turned to Him.  Through Christ, the relationship with God that son broke would be restored!  Jesus encouraged his listeners to have faith in this and believe.  Some did, but others sadly did not.

We also honored Wesley this week for his birthday.

SCIENCE

This week we finished learning about the digestive system. We added the pancreas and the liver to the skeleton in the classroom and discussed the special jobs each one of them has. On Friday, we made a simple drawing of the digestive system in our journals as a way to review what was learned before moving on the respiratory system. We did a brief introduction to the respiratory system focusing on the placement of the tracheain relation to our esophagus and noting that the trachea splits into bronchi that go into each of the two lungs. Each bronchi has bronchioles with tiny air sacs called alveoli at the end. Both groups noted how much the bronchioles look like broccoli! We will discuss what each of these do more in depth in the upcoming week.

***You can finish adding all of the parts of the digestive system to your skeleton at home as well as copy the pages assigned for the respiratory system.

STUDIO TIME

A rainy day didn’t stop the Seeds kids from having fun indoor park with board games and lawn games.

In our studio time the students had the opportunity to challenge themselves to learn some of the new board games we have purchased at The Well or learn to a play another one that they had never tried before. We loved seeing their faces light up and giggle together. All teachers and assistants were busy playing along with them especially during the rainy days inside.

HISTORY

In History, we learned about the Vikings!  We learned that they were traders, raiders, settlers and explorers.  We learned about the kinds of boats they used to cross great distances and how many of their writings have been found in many of their ancient settlements, from places in North America, all the way to Africa.  Students even worked on RUNESTONE writing, using their name or even making one up on their student sheets.  The younger students enjoyed dancing to Viking melodies.

Seeds Memory Verse Song

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal (Clang, clang, clang). If I have great power and understand, all mysteries, and all things, and if I have the faith to remove mountains, but have not love...I am nothing!
— 1 Corinthians 13:1-2

The Oaks Program

BIBLE

In Oaks Bible time, we have discussed 4 areas in which the apostle Paul’s life had been transformed: his character, his relationships, his message and his mission.  The students were challenged to think about the ways these areas of their own lives have been changed by their experience with Christ.  They also continued to recite the memory passage from 1 Corinthians.

OAKS MEMORY PASSAGE (1 Corinthians 13:1-5a):

1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.

SCIENCE

In Chemistry, the students learned about the properties of gases such as not having a fixed shape, being compressible and having very low density compared to solids and liquids. In addition, they also learned about atmospheric pressure, which is the weight of the air pressing down on a specific area. Standard pressure can be measured using many different units including 1 atmosphere or 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi). Other new information the students learned about gases included the Kinetic Molecular Theory and the five gas laws. The girls demonstrated Boyle's Law using a water bottle they had.

And in Marine Science, the students learned all about marine ecosystems. They learned that in the open ocean, the deepest zones can be deeper than 4 miles, and animals still thrive there. And in the tropical coral reefs, individual soft-bodied animals called polyps build protective shells that we know as coral. These shells are made by drawing calcium from the ocean water and from other nearby coral. The students also learned that in the rocky shore and in the sandy shore, different animals are suited to live at different zones of each based on the exposure to sun, predators, and tide levels. Lastly, they learned that the mangrove forest is unique because of the mangrove trees' ability to live in brackish water and sometimes be submerged in water.

HISTORY

In History, we watched a very interesting video about how Vikings made their ships and took notes on the places they traveled.  These sea crafts evolved over time to become strong enough to withstand huge ocean waves and cross great distances.  Much of their technology in ship building came from previous empires, such as the Greek and Romans, however, they truly made it their own for their own ways of living. This was really cool to watch and talk about.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In PE, the students had a great time with Mrs. Michelle working on a really fun and challenging new exercise routine. Not only were these kids working up a sweat, they were having a great time as well. Thank you Mrs. Michelle for making fitness fun!
