Week 13: Thankful to be Back!

Before the Thanksgiving break, we held several celebrations! Above, the SEEDS students dressed in their Roman tunics that went well with our study of Roman feasts. They enjoyed ice cream together thanks to our amazing team of parents. And in The Garden, the kids had a Fruit Party to honor their friend Nova!

SUGGESTED AT-HOME READINGS VARY PER PROGRAM. PLEASE GO TO THE SECTION OF YOUR PROGRAM TO SEE THE SELECTED PAGES.

The Garden

This week we began to prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus by talking about some of God’s messengers that told the people how and where Jesus was born. We learned about two of God’s messengers, or prophets, called Isaiah and Micah. Isaiah told the people that Jesus would be born to a woman who was not yet married and that he would be like a light shining in the darkness. Micah told the people that Jesus would be born in the tiny town of Bethlehem. This week we will learn about other messengers that announced his birth.

During activity time, Mrs. Doreen hid some fun new acorns in the park and the children had to find them. They sorted, counted, and later added them to the sensory table to play with the corn. On Thursday, we worked in the kitchen together to make the pumpkin muffins for the long-awaited fruit party! The party was also a wonderful opportunity to say goodbye to Nova and her family. We shared some songs together and Nova’s mom shared her musical talent with us by sharing some lovely songs with the kids. Mrs. Doreen prepared a beautiful book of memories for Nova to take with her and after looking at it together, the families enjoyed a lovely picnic and time of fellowship out in the little park. Thanks to everyone who helped make the activity such a special one. We will surely miss Nova at the Garden!

The Seeds Program

This was a bittersweet week, as in our Bible time, we said goodbye to our friend River.  He and his family are moving to California and since his birthday wasn’t until next month, we decided to honor him before he left. Thank you to all the parents who helped make our ice cream party a success!  We read from the book of Acts, where we saw the church growing because of the Word that was shared by the apostles.  People like Paul went to far away lands (like Rome) to share the gospel and many people came to believe.

We also were able to pack some of the Thanksgiving bags that we have been working on over the last few weeks. Thank you again all who have contributed to this food drive.

SCIENCE

This week we did a complete overview of the human skeletal system. We used a song to walk us through the different bones and their names. The kids each received a copy of the skeletal system and glued it into their journals. Then, they chose two different colors of colored pencils to shade the bones as we discussed them beginning with the skull. The first day we got to the ribs and sternum and on the second day we completed all of the bones. This week we will look more deeply into the different types of joints as well as the bones in our hands, feet, and backbone.

History

This was a great week for the kids in the Seeds program.  It was a time where all the students were able to finish their New Testament books packet; they had drawn pictures on each card and were able to organize them in the correct order.  We also were able to get our Roman tunics ready for our ice cream party.  The kids looked so good in their colorful costumes.  They were so excited to try them on and take photos together.

The Oaks Program

Science

In Chemistry, the students did an excellent job on test # 3! Their consistent study habits are really paying off! And for chapter 10, we started learning about solutions--what solvents are, what solutes are, and how temperature can affect how well two different substances mix. To practically demonstrate this, we made sweet tea using various types of sugar and varying temperatures of tea.

The Pre-Physics students also did a wonderful job on test # 3! Their developing study habits are serving them well. As for the new topics in chapter 10, we learned about light and sound. We learned what the speed of sound is in different materials as well as how sound is measured in decibels. We attempted a very primitive experiment to demonstrate the difference between the speed of light and sound using wooden sticks to make a noise and creating as much distance between two partners as possible, but the difference observed was so slight. We all agreed that the difference in speed between sound and light is much more noticeable with lightning and thunder.

HISTORY

In our History class, the students continued reading about the Roman emperors and the impact they made during the centuries that they reigned.  Some emperors were good leaders, but most caused the decay of the empire because of their own faults.  We were able to identify strengths and weaknesses and see what things were effective and what things were not.  It was also interesting to see how those things affected the lengths of each emperor's rule.
