Week 12: In Our Bones

When we say something is “in our bones,” we mean that it comes from deep within us. This can be artistic talent, a special ability at sports, or just a kind way of relating to people. The story we read this week was about a young girl who had art “in her bones.” This was appropriate since in Science, we began learning about bones. Read more below!

The Garden

This week, we heard about how God cared for Noah by giving him instructions to build an ark to save his family and animals from a worldwide flood, providing protection during the flood, and making a covenant with him afterward to never again destroy the earth with floodwaters. He gave us the rainbow in the sky to remind us of His promise. This care was a result of Noah’s faithful obedience to God's commands. We were all able to see the story illustrated with blocks and wooden figures, and that was so cool. We also learned how God took care of the Israelites and Moses while they were in the desert. We looked at a story where God sends friends to “lift up” Moses’s arms to help him win the battle. We emphasized that God cares for us by giving us friends as well.

During activity time, we were able to help prepare the bags of food to be donated. We found the items and counted together as we put them in. We also added some final touches to our Creation books that we will share with our parents during our fruit party. On Thursday, we worked with clay to make nests with eggs, which reminded us once again of this Bible verse:

-Matthew 6:26: "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than them?"

The Seeds Program

This week we had the honor of celebrating Alicia’s birthday and reading aloud her birthday book, a beautiful story called “Painting Wonder” about the original artist of the Lord of the Rings and Narnia books.   Our time and worship came to an important point this week because we finally got to the story of Jesus giving His life on the cross. The kids paid close attention to how, leading up to his arrest, Jesus instructed his disciples about many things that would happen in the future. What the disciples didn’t understand was exactly how Jesus would accomplish the salvation that God promised them. Reviewing the story, the kids were able to see how God’s plan for salvation was different from any man could have imagined. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice and because of him we have been set free.

SCIENCE

We said goodbye to the senses this week and began to learn about our bones. The younger group played a guessing game of the senses. Each student got up and thought of something. Then, they told their friends clues about how it looked like, and what it smelled, tasted, or sounded like if applicable. They enjoyed trying to figure out each other’s answers and had the opportunity to practice speaking in front of the group. The older students jumped right into learning about the bones. After watching a Nemours Health video called “All About Bones” they were split in groups to work on a model skeleton. The younger students were also able to use clay to begin learning about bones but they had the challenge of balancing a big rolled up piece of playdoh like a tower. This proved to be challenging but some were able to complete it. Then, Mrs. Vivi gave them a skewer to help give their tower some support. It was much easier to balance it and they were even able to make it taller. We compared this to how important it is to have bones that give us support and protection.

History

Some of our students finally finished their New Testament book cards and were able to demonstrate that they have memorized all 27 in order.  They also learned which of these were written by the apostle Paul.  It was a few years after Paul died that Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans.  These events will be placed on the timeline this week.

Studio Time

This week, we finished our study of Joseph Haydn and we introduced Mozart as the next composer that we will learn about. With the younger students we read the book Because, a lovely story by Mo Willems about the power of what witnessing great music or art can do. The little girl in the story is inspired to study and eventually compose music because she attended a show at the orchestra. The older students used their studio time as part of their Science class  to build skeletons with clay and straws. They shared their creations with each other at the end of the class.

The Oaks Program

Science

In Chemistry, the students learned more about metal alloys and their uses. Ferrous alloys, such as steel, are great for construction while non-ferrous alloys, like brass, are used to construct certain musical instruments. And in preparation for test # 3, we played another fun game of Verdad o Falso! Always a good time trying to knock down the cup pyramid with the ping pong ball!

In Pre-Physics, the students continued to practice how to calculate work, energy, and power. The equation for work is work (J)= Force (N) x Distance or displacement (m). The equation for power is Power (watts)= Work (J) / Time (s). To find calories spent, you multiply work (J) x 0.00024 cal. And in preparation for test # 3, we played another rousing game of Verdad O Falso to review and prepare!

History

The Oaks began learning about the emperors that followed the original Julio-Claudian dynasty, and how many of them were ill suited to rule the empire.  After 117 AD, at the height of its size, the empire began to weaken and this led to the eventual fall of Rome that we will be discussing in the coming days.

Memory Verse

Therefore I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. for this is your spiritual act of worship.
