Week 20: Art all Around
Art is popping up everywhere at The Well! The Garden kids worked on observational drawings, while the Seeds constructed music notebooks and the Oaks took to the stage with an original play.
Instrumental private music lessons are now available at The Well, taught by Mr. Jean Requena. Check out our arts academy page for more information.

THE GARDEN
This week we celebrated the last birthday of the school year as we honored Jonah! We loved reading the funny story of Harold and Hog Pretend for Real together.
On Tuesday, the students worked with modeling clay to sculpt a farm animal of their choice while others built farms using the wooden blocks. On Thursday, they had an observational drawing challenge. One of the things we love to do at our center is to draw and we seek to develop that at an early age. I couldn’t resist taking the kids outside to draw a back-hoe front loader. We practiced observing the lines that we saw and copying them to make our drawing. This was not an easy feat. Isabella coached herself through it and broke it down in pieces. I helped them look up and find what was missing. When we shared our drawings at the end of the day, I shared with them how proud I was of each of them for persevering. When I asked what we can do when something is hard, Cesare said, “ask God to help us like this…please God, help me.” What a wonderful perspective to have.

SEEDS
Our worship time this week focused on the beginning of the nation of Israel, as Samuel was used by God to anoint Saul, the first king. The students also enjoyed watching an original play by the Oaks and honoring Noah this week.
In History, we reviewed what we had already learned about the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations and the kids loved getting a pack of M&Ms as a way to remember the two people groups. To learn more about the Mycenaeans, we read aloud from the book, The Trojan Horse. We also had the chance to sketch the horse for our class binders.
This week in Science we followed the process of germination of our seeds. Now that the roots have emerged, we talked about the two main purposes of roots: to anchor the plant and to absorb the water and nutrients from the soil. We learned that there are two different kinds of root systems: fibrous and taproot. While our bean seeds will have a fibrous root system with many branches, other plants have a taproot system like carrots which have a primary root and small little fibers coming out of it. The next step in the germination is for the hypocotyl, or the part of the plant that becomes the stem emerges. We also learned that the stem holds the leaves and props the plant up as well as serve as the route for the water and nutrients to travel throughout the plant. The students were able to draw these next steps in their journals. The older students also learned about gravitropism and phototropism. We will extend our study of plants for one more week before moving to the 4th day of Creation.
In music the students were very excited to use their music notebooks! They wrote and named the music notes on the staff. We also did some sight singing and finished our music folders.
OAKS
The Oaks did a fantastic job of performing Olivia’s original play, “Legacy” for the Seeds students last Tuesday. They used the facts that they had learned in class about King Tutankhamen to craft the script. And with just a week of rehearsal, the students did an amazing job, costumes and all! One of my favorite parts was hearing the little Seeds giggle at the funny parts of the play. The cast got to do a question and answer session with the Seeds on Thursday.
The students in the morning program, finished their Proverbs projects and were able to present them as well. Mateo and Elisha shared reflections on several Proverbs, while Olivia demonstrated verses that she memorized and Joshua shared the original fables he wrote based on certain Proverbs.
This week in biology, the students learned about the important facts and bones of the posterior skeleton. They practiced retrieval methods in small groups and as a large class. Next week, they will be tested on all they learned these past 3 chapters!
