Week 12: November 6-10 - "Getting a Kick out of Life"

“Getting a Kick out of Life”

We spent a lot of time outdoors this week as November has brought a slight drop in temperature. This made going out to the park for kickball and soccer a lot more pleasurable. In fact, we had a guest soccer coach come in this week to perform drills and give the students some pointers on their skills. Check out the photos below.

Fun in the Sun

While many of the kids enjoyed the soccer clinic run by our guest teacher Yalive, others enjoyed sitting in the shade.

THE GARDEN

Emiliano works on his self-portrait.

This week in worship the theme has been: “I don’t quit, I persevere”. We studied about two men that persevered, Noah and Moses. Moses did not quit and received help from his friends when they lifted his arms up while the Israelites were in battle. As long as his arms were lifted up, the people had the victory. Noah did not quit when he had to build the ark even when he had never seen rain before. He trusted God’s words and persevered even when he was the only one that believed God’s words about the upcoming events. We don’t quit because God is on our side and is always in control.

This week we had the privilege of honoring Estela for her birthday. They enjoyed delicious cupcakes. Afterwards, we practiced gross motor skills by balancing on one foot while playing hop scotch and shadow tag. In park time, the kids have been enjoying a monster tag game they made up together.  It is a joy to hear them all yelling and laughing while they run trying not to get tagged. On Thursday we made self-portraits with Mrs. Vivi. They had a mirror to observe all the details on their face and drew what they saw. They did an amazing job!  This was a followup activity of making their faces with clay.  The children also enjoyed making faces with other materials and playing blocks together while making up their own game. “Yo te voy ayudar. Soy del reino Jesús”, said Estela during blocks.

Let’s keep encouraging the children to try new things and to persevere when they don’t succeed at first! God is our Help.

SEEDS

Joshua teaches through the Matthew Chapter 7

Worship

In our time of worship this week, Mr. Jared taught through the portion in Matthew chapter 7 where Jesus instructs his followers to choose the narrow path, since the wide path of the world leads to destruction.  It was important to clarify to the children that although many people in the world may think that their ways are right and in the end, they will go to heaven, the truth is that there is only ONE way that leads to the Father and heaven and that is through our belief in Jesus Christ and our only Lord and Savior.  He is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE.

On Friday, Joshua continued teaching through this theme of basing our faith on Jesus alone.  Using our puppet friends, Righty and Lefty, Joshua showed the students that building our life and faith on anything other than Jesus, is like the foolish man who built his house upon the sand.  When the rains came, the house washed away.  Both lessons were powerful truths that we all needed to be reminded of.

Science

Would you find a tiger in the taiga? The taiga biome is a cold, subarctic forest with long winters and short cool summers.  It spans from the tundra biome in the northern polar region to the temperate region.  It is also known as the boreal forest and mostly covered in evergreen, or coniferous trees.

How do animals survive the harsh cold winters of the taiga? Some animals adapt by growing a thick undercoat while others hibernate, going into a deep sleep where their heart rate and breathing slow down immensely.  Animals that are neither adapted or unable to hibernate will migrate, typically moving south until the temperatures increase.

And, yes, there are tigers in the Siberian Taiga!

Studio Time

We began the week by sculpting the shape of South America with Play-Doh. We looked at the atlas and tried to think about what shape it looked like. "An ice cream cone with a scoop!"; "The skull of a bird!" The students set out eagerly to shape it. After completing their first challenge, Mrs.Vivi gave them a big piece of paper to draw the shape and outline the countries. Finally, they labeled the countries and two major landmarks: the Amazon River and the Andes mountain. This work proved to be very helpful on Friday when we played the Geography game. I could tell how much better they could remember the countries. We finished the week on a sweet note as we shared some of Mrs. Vivi’s family's favorite treats from Argentina. She shared stories of her visits as a child and how much Argentineans love to put dulce de leche in almost everything. The dulce de leche was a huge hit, especially adding it to the "bizcocho salado" crackers and bananas (one of Mrs. Vivi’s dad's favorite combinations). She also played some tango music in the background to help them all "travel" to Buenos Aires.

OAKS MIDDLE YEARS

Sweets of the South

The OAKS enjoyed some sweet (and salty) treats from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Oaks Science

On Tuesday we gathered and shared our feedback about the presentations. Mrs. Vivi began to share with the students one on one about what the others had said in their peer evaluations. We worked on a Rainforest worksheet to put in their binders and enjoyed the full-length version of the El Yunque documentary that Esteban's family shared with us.

Oaks Geography

The Oaks closed up their time in South America this week as they learned the capitals of all the Spanish-speaking countries of the continent.  This led to a great discussion on how speaking more than one language opens up so many possibilities for a person in their lives.  Not only is travel much easier, but the opportunities to share the Gospel with those who do not know Jesus are multiplied.  We also did not research on different facts about the continent, including the differences in climates and agricultural seasons.

Oaks Studio

In Studio, we worked on large South America maps while listening to tango music and enjoying dulce de leche and traditional crackers. We also tasted "Mate" which is a type of herbal tea that most Argentineans enjoy daily. Not everyone enjoyed the taste or smell but Josh and Judah did!
