Week 29: Performance, Puppets, Paint and PJ's
WEEK 29: Performance, Puppets, Paint and PJ’s
The Arts Academy clubs finally debuted their production of Charlotte’s Web this weekend to a full house, while the kids in Oaks, Seeds and the Garden enjoyed a lot of painting—as well as one day in their pajamas! REMEMBER: This is our final week before our next break, May 1-5 (the Ramos will be on Professional Development in the Midwest). This will be a great time to catch up on any readings you may have missed.
Scroll down to see the supplemental readings for the week, galleries of our latest photos, and our current memory verse.
Yes!
What began as a “crazy idea” to come to OAKS in pajamas, ended up being a whole lot of fun.
Memory Verse #13
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
SEEDS and OAKS Programs Suggested Readings for the Week
The readings are meant to reinforce the topics covered in class last week and to have parents and other siblings be a part of what we’re learning. These readings are not required for the class, but can be a good supplement. You can try to read all or just a few of the selections. Use your discretion as to what to cover based upon the ages of your children.
HISTORY
The Story of the World (Review)
P. 429 - Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh
P. 434 - The Korean War
P. 441 - Argentina’s President and his wife
GARDEN - Pre-K and K
This week for worship we studied when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. The children were surprised and said that they did not know of anyone that had died and risen from the dead except for Jesus. Emma shared a story of a movie she saw where a kid fell into ice water and after losing his life, a miracle took place and he came back to life. Hallel shared how she knew a kid that had died. Elena asked her in the most natural way, “did she resurrect?”. “No, she died”, Hallel replied back plainly. We were all excited talking about how one day we will also be resurrected thanks to Jesus. We will all live together in Heaven!
The children put together a puppet show and Mrs. Vivi and Miss Nicole were the requested audience. Later on for park time, the kids had another drama/role-play going on outside. This time, Juan Diego and Elena were the parents and Hallel was their baby. They also made beds in their house and laid there for a bit while they talked and encouraged each other to rest for a little bit.
Drawing time has been an activity that the children have grown to love. They concentrate for longer periods of time, have fun and interesting conversations and even talk about how expensive life is sometimes. They are hilarious! They used cards with different shapes and forms and drew and colored them. These turned out fantastic!
The kids were excited because it was pajama day and had special visitors that accompanied us for activity time, Mrs. Jenny’s children! Later on they got to draw characters from Vegetables in Underwear, one of their all-time favorite books. They drew the characters, painted with watercolors and outlined the end result with flare pens. Miss Vivi finished off our day with the book Pajama Time and a cool and fun song she made up.
SEEDS - Grades 1-6
Worship
Our worship time this week was quite lively! We have been learning our new memory verse which we will be proclaiming this Wednesday for Proclaim Day - Matthew 6:33. The movement that we do is pretty high energy, but helps us remember that it is the Lord himself that provides everything we need…including our ability to stand, jump, clap and sing. SEEKING HIM FIRST!
Science
God created the earth to be one giant magnet, which is why a compass needle always points north…unless other magnets interfere!
We took some time this past week to play with magnets. The students used a variety of magnets to test different metals in order to find out if they were ferromagnetic, strongly attracted to magnetite, the main ingredient of most magnets. They also had the opportunity to explore the strength of these magnets through cardboard, rolling cars with magnets attached, gathering paper clips and different items on top of the cardboard while holding the magnets to the underside. We also sprinkled iron shavings on a piece of paper located on top of a magnet to view the magnetic field surrounding it. Throughout the next classes we will explore magnets more and discuss the north and south poles of magnets in greater detail.
History
This week, we worked on finishing up our presidential paintings of Juan and Eva Peron. The kids did a great job using the tempra paints to explore color combinations and great really eye-catching pieces. Holding them up to dry at the window reminded some of us of stained glass.
Studio
Reading the book When PIGasso met MOOtise by Jane Laden was a great way to introduce the students to the last two artists we will learn about this year: Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. It is a funny and pun-filled book that highlights (and exaggerates) the dynamics of the relationship between these two famous artists. After Joshua read the book out loud, we talked about what really happened when Pablo Picasso moved to Paris and met Henri Matisse. At first, they got along well but then they became rivals. After some time they decided that they had more in common than they thought and actually became the best of friends until death separated them. We will talk more about Picasso and Matisse in the upcoming weeks and will work on several individual and group projects inspired by them.
OAKS - 7+
Worship
In “A Young Person’s Guide to Knowing God,” we read an incredible story that illustrated our time here on this earth. In “The Matchbox and the Silver Coin,” we were reminded that our physical bodies are fragile like a matchbox, which can be damaged and destroyed pretty easily, whereas our spirits live for eternity and should be viewed as a silver coin. We can have assurance that as believers in Jesus Christ, we can always find comfort in knowing that one day, we will be with Him forever. Great conversation followed this reading. We also continued learning the Spanish hymn, “Juntos Cantaremos” by Emily Aviles.
History/Studio
This week, we worked on finishing up our presidential paintings of Juan and Eva Peron. The Oaks kids were also able to watch a Torchlighters episode of “The Richard Wurmbrand” story, which gave them a good idea of life for Romanian Christians behind the Iron Curtain. This week we will continue our exploration of the spread of Communism in the 1950s and 1960s.
Science
This week we discussed batteries and how they work. We learned that the flow of electrons in a battery moves from the place of greater electric charge (indicated with the minus sign in the battery) to the place of lesser electric charge (indicated with a positive sign on the battery). On Thursday, Mrs. Jenny came to teach the group all about circuits. They were able to create a human circuit with jump ropes. They also learned that a circuit needs a LOAD (what needs to be powered), WIRES (to conduct the electricity), and a POWER SOURCE (to generate the electricity). They enjoyed working with the models and making the light bulbs turn on and off with the switch Mrs. Jenny prepared.
Registration for returning students begins on April 30.
