Week 25: Show and Tell

WEEK 25: Show and Tell

The mission of The Well Center for the Arts is to train children to use their gifts for God’s glory and to equip them to go and tell His story. We certainly saw this happening this week as the kids in the Garden drew pictures of the bible story they are learning; the kids in Seeds learned about one another more deeply during their show and tell time, and the Oaks continued writing original short stories that pointed to God’s greatness and character.

Scroll down to see the supplemental readings for the week, galleries of our latest photos, and our current memory verse.

Friends

Friendship is one of the most important qualities in the life of a believer. We rejoice in seeing the life-long friendships being formed in our programs. Here Carolina and Emma enjoy the swing together.

Memory Verse #12

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:6-7

SEEDS and OAKS Programs Suggested Readings for the Week

The readings are meant to reinforce the topics covered in class last week and to have parents and other siblings be a part of what we’re learning. These readings are not required for the class, but can be a good supplement. You can try to read all or just a few of the selections. Use your discretion as to what to cover based upon the ages of your children.

  • HISTORY

    • The Last 500 Years / World History from Ancient to Modern Times

      • Europe at War; The World at War - P. 80-83 / p. 276-279

    • The Story of the World

      • The Holocaust - P. 369

      • The War that Stretched Across the World - p. 375

      • The Atom Bomb - p. 383

GARDEN - Pre-K and K

An outdoor kitchen was created on the stage this week.

Thank you Lord for this special week. We are grateful that we were all together again! This week’s story was the Prodigal or “Lost” Son.

“Se estaba muriendo de hambre”, responded Elena, when asked what it meant that, “the son was dead and then alive, was lost and then found?”

The children learned through this parable that the son had sinned against his father BUT had repented and came back home. His father was joyful and embraced him with compassion and love, just like our Heavenly Father receives us each time we come to Him with a humble and contrite heart.  Praise God that He has redeemed us through Jesus and we are all welcome to come to Him no matter what we have done. Even though the older brother in the story did not show compassion, we learned that we are to show compassion and love towards others because God had done so for us and continues to do so everyday. After our story, the children drew their favorite part while listening to the hymn of the month, “Juntos Cantaremos.”

Later on, we took the kitchen outside. We brought the food, plates, cooking utensils and the children made a home kitchen.  The kids had a blast cooking & setting the table outdoors. The Lord blessed us with such a nice day outside!

Inside for the afternoon meeting, we sang our months of the year song. The children have learned it so well in English.  Please have them sing it to you at home. We counted the numbers on the calendar and practiced the letter of the week, the letter “Ss”. After practicing to write the letter “Ss” and sounding out words with the “s” sound, it was time to dance! Elena and Hallel really wanted Juan Diego to have the opportunity to dance with the scarves.  Mrs. Vivi led the children through some exercises while dancing with the scarves while Miss Nicole played a variation of classical music for them. They jumped, danced, laughed, followed the leader and danced freely too. We finished our day reading a book about a seed sprouting into an oak tree.

Thank you Father for another great week together!

SEEDS - Grades 1-6

Worship

Show and Tell time in Studio helps students with their public speaking skills.

We began our new memory verse this week as we shared about all the things we can possibly get nervous, scared or anxious about.  This was important, because the verse, from Philippians 4, tells us to NOT get anxious about these things, but to pray to God about them with a thankful heart.  This was a great reminder and a wonderful way to begin the week off properly.

Science

What better time is there to bring “Tea Time” back into science class than when discussing thermodynamics, the study of thermal (heat) energy?

A few weeks ago, while studying energy, we learned about the first law of thermodynamics which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.

The second law of thermodynamics is often called the law of entropy (a measure of disorder). It explains why heat flows from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower temperature.  While brewing some tea, we observed how the heat transferred to the air molecules surrounding the hot tea, as well as the glass mug.  We also held an ice pack, noticing that the heat transferred from our hands to the frozen ice pack.

I asked the students if their rooms cleaned themselves…wouldn’t that be amazing?? All matter in the universe is moving from a state of order, to a state of disorder, displaying the law of entropy.  If we look around us, we can observe this wearing out, decaying, and breaking down everywhere.  Things do not last.

When studying entropy, it makes me so thankful that God makes all things new!  He renews hearts and minds, despite the fact that the world around us is increasingly messy and falling apart.

History

Sometimes, History is really hard to study.  This was the case this week as we learned about the Holocaust, a terrible event that occurred during World War II.  However, despite this darkness, we learned about people, like the Ten Boom family of Holland, who put their own lives at risk to protect others.  They, and many others, acted bravely in the middle of this unbelievable situation.  We also learned about the release of two atomic bombs in Japan.  While the act did put an end to the war, there were many innocent people killed as well.  Despite all this, we remembered that God has been and will always be in control and we can put our hope and trust in Him at all times.

Studio

Our students were blessed with two awesome substitute teachers as I recovered from a cold this week! Miss Gilmarie and Miss Marlena led all three groups dring Studio Time last Wednesday. First, they took the time to explain the expectation for Show and Tell on Friday and answered any questions. Then, the students were able to work on their sticker maps of the United States that they had started in History class.

On Friday, I was happy to be back with the students to delight in their presentations. I explained to them that these kinds of activities are helpful for them to continue to grow in public speaking as well as in listening attentively to others. Miss Gilmarie added that it also gives us an opportunity to get to know each other better. And that was the case with all three groups. From hidden talents and interests, to truly personal and emotional belongings, the students did a great job sharing with each other. They also did a wonderful job listening to each other and asking questions at the end of the presentations. Ask your child if he/she remembers one of the objects shared in class and to retell what their classmate said back to you.

OAKS - 7+

Worship/Studio

The students created original “air-raid warning” posters like those made during the time of World War II.

The students continued writing their original stories this week and will be finishing them up by Tuesday, March 21.  We are looking forward to sharing them, not only in class with each other, but also by uploading the readings to a future podcast.  We were also able to honor both Olivia and Joshua this week for their birthday.  They, like their classmates, were prayed over and received a journal to record some of their favorite quotes.

History/Studio

As with the SEEDS History study, the events surrounding World War II were hard to investigate, not because of a lack of information, but rather due to the tragic events of the bombings in the pacific and of course the Holocaust.  However, the students used their creativity to make original safety posters that would have been used in the time of WWII, as many Americans feared air raids.  The students looked at images and read about the accounts to inspire their work.  Great job guys!

Science

The sun provides two things that are essential to life: light and heat. This was a great way to connect our study of light to our study of thermal energy this week. On Tuesday, Mateo and Joshua worked together to build a cool periscope to model how light reflects off of smooth surfaces like mirrors. On Thursday, we began to discuss the first and “zeroth” law of thermodynamics. Zeroth law? Yes, indeed. The kids were as surprised as I to find out that there is such a thing as a “Zeroth” law. It turns out that after establishing the three laws of thermodynamics, scientists decided that they had forgotten one very essential law that actually preceded all three laws of thermodynamics. The zeroth law deals with the concept of thermal equilibrium which establishes that when two objects are at the same temperature, there will be no transfer of heat. Instead of shifting the laws down to make four, they decided it was better to name it with a zero and put it at the beginning! This week we will examine the remaining laws and delve deeper into the study of thermodynamics.

Arts Academy

This week was very special as both our Art Club and Drama Clubs worked together! The Art Club began some costume designs for the play, Charlotte’s Web, which will be performing towards the end of April. In the photos below, you can see some of the initial costumes coming together.
